Safety Bay Petanque Club

How to play Petanque

The aim of the game is to get your Boule (the heavy steel ball) as close to the cochonnet (small wooden or plastic ball) as possible. Each team is made up of 1 or more players (maximum 4) who take turns to throw their boules. A toss of a coin usually determines which team goes first, who then select the order in which their team plays. The game proceeds according to whose boule is closest to the cochonnet when the opposite team then attempts to get closer (points) or to displace (or shoot) their opponents boule. There are several different techniques for throwing the boule, palm up, palm down, rolling, lobbing combined with standing or squatting.
